Vallecchi celebrates Futurisms centenary

The 1909 fountain-pen is an object-sculpture inspired by the works of the Futurists and, in particular, by the plastic production of Umberto Boccioni. The 1909 is a fountain-pen to use, as well as admire, a pen of tactile emotions and moods. One must start from the central nucleus of the object one wants to create, in order to discover the new laws, that is the new forms which connect it invisibly and mathematically to the visible plastic infinite and to the interior plastic infinite. The new plasticity will thus be the translation in plaster, bronze, glass, wood, or any other material, of atmospheric planes that link and intersect things. Sculpture should give life to objects by rendering their extension into space palpable, systematic, and plastic, because no one can deny any longer that one object continues at the point another begins, and that everything surrounding our body (bottle, automobile, house, tree, street) intersects it and divides it into sections by forming an arabesque of curves and straight lines. So wrote Boccioni, the purest and most representative artist of the Italian Futurist movement in the Technical Manifesto of Futurist Sculpture, in which he criticises the ideal of classical beauty that portrays the subject in a static manner, and announces his intention to create a work of art that represents the figure in motion, grasping its dynamic lines.

TECHNICAL FEATURES
It took three years of work made of studies, research, designs, and prototypes to define the1909. The pen's central body is inspired by the works of Boccioni; form and function merge to generate the fountain-pen sculpture. Both the concave and convex parts express the pens movement in space, as it writes and moves over the sheet. The sculpture body, clip, and nib are made with the cire perdue technique, while the cap and barrel are turned from a block of black resin. The rings around the cap and lower part of the pen are marked by a crown of black enamelled triangles, inspired by Futurist graphic works. Each fountain-pen is a unique specimen assembled and hand-finished by expert professionals. The projects and realisation are the work of architect Vincenzo Capalbo of the associated studio ArtMedia Studio, an expert connoisseur of Futurism and author of the exhibition, La metropoli Futurista _ Progetti Impossibili, held in the Uffizi Gallery in 1999. Available in the Argento version in an edition of 1909 pieces, and in the Oro version in a limited edition of 199 pieces, the 1909 fountain-pen is the fruit of the collaboration between Vallecchi and the prestigious, historical Florentine firm, Visconti, makers of superior quality pens.
