MONTEGRAPPA SPIRITO DI STELLA LIMITED EDITION FOUNTAIN PEN ISSPN_IW - MEDIUM NIB

Montegrappa was proud to be associated with the sterling efforts of Wheels on Waves, or WOW. Wheels on Waves promotes the rights of disabled people, calling attention to this worthy cause by crossing the ocean on board the catamaran “Lo Spirito di Stella.” Believed to be the first in the world to be fully accessible to disabled people, Lo Spirito di Stella, the sailing will promotes the United Nations’ Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, from Miami to Rome, from the UN’s General Secretary to Pope Francis.

Lo Spirito di Stella’s crossing included 18 different legs from Miami to Trieste, with as many crew teams. They board the vessel in sequence, as a representation of the world and its diversity. The expedition begun in May 2017 with the collection from the hands of the UN Secretary General of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, ending in Trieste with the event of the Barcelona in October 2017.
This momentous voyage served as the sounding board that makes known this very important document. Its goal was to contribute to the removal of architectural barriers, but above all, to dispel the psychological issues restricting the rights of the people, promoting equality between the disabled and the able-bodied.

The Lo Spirito di Stella writing instruments are made of navy blue resin, the color chosen to recall the sea.

The barrels are crafted from laser-cut teak, similar to the decking of fine sailing craft. All trim is made of stainless steel.

The shape of the pens suggests the streamlining of the catamaran’s hulls, through an elongated cap with a sharpened point.

A sleek signature clip has the wind rose symbol which was used by meteorologists to give the percentage of the time the wind blows from each direction during the observation period. Historically, wind roses were predecessors of the compass rose found on charts. Wind data used was taken from a database of worldwide observations taken from 1850 - 1974 and were included in order to let the sailor know which directions the major winds in an area blew.

The Spirito di Stella Pen Collection

A DREAM OF UNIVERSAL ACCESSIBILITY
Anyone can climb on board without having to leave her/his wheelchair. The dinette, the cabin and the bathroom are specifically designed for disability, allowing the wheelchair users to move around freely.

The crew members will also have the opportunity to pilot the catamaran on their own, feeling part of this project, all thanks to the accessible environments designed and created ad hoc.

It’s a two-fold mission, that allows any passenger to live the experience in complete autonomy, proving to everyone that sometimes, the most difficult barriers to overcome are the mental ones. The navigation serves as a compelling metaphor of self-improvement and personal growth.
